Hair in 1866 through the 1880's

Through further research on particular hairstyles during this time period, I learned that these styles were far more different than I imagined. When picturing this era, I envisioned women with longer hair, and men with short and particularly clean styled hair such as maybe a comb-over or perhaps more of a "slicked back" look. As reading specific newspapers from the 1860's through the 1880's, I discovered how the men typically wore there hair longer while the women wore theirs short for a clean and simple finish. I also found that women would often cut and sell their hair for money, which is not something you would normally find during our time period today. There were also preferences on what your hair should possibly look like, such as it was desired to be blonde for it was described as "delicate poetry", rather how brown hair was described as "boring" or average". Along with these differences, people of this time period, men and women, typically curled their hair rather than how now, straight hair is more of a "fashion fad". I found it very interesting to view these newspaper articles for it made me realize the fashion changes that have developed over time. Here, is the link to the specific newspaper article that I viewed to find this information.
