Reconstruction Research

1. By looking up these search terms such as "negro" and "black codes", I learned that African Americans were treated more similarly to property rather than people. When speaking to or about them, they were refereed to as "it" or "the negro" instead of calling them a person or human being. I also found it interesting how they treated the African Americans. I already was aware that they were not treated with the most respect, but through research, I found that whites would often swear and tell them how they were "worthless" even though these African Americans were doing so much work for the whites during this time period. I personally enjoyed using these articles instead of the textbook because it offered a single persons perspective on the given situation rather than pure facts. I also found it interesting to hear stories of the certain subjects rather than how life was during that life period. Here is the link from the articles I chose to read:
2. I found that Reconstruction came to an end in 1877 because advocates of the republican party candidate, Rutherford Hayes, met secretly with southern democrats to negotiate acceptance of Hayes' elections. If the republicans decided to withdrawal federal troops from the south, then the democrats would agree not to to block Hayes' election. This would then pursue democratic control over the area.
