Exhibit

Today's exhibit takes you on Patrick Sonnier's crime journey. You start off with viewing his police report from November 4, 1977, the night where him and his brother killed and sexually assaulted Loretta Bourque and David LeBlanc. As you walk through the exhibit, you will get to see the closer details of the crime such as how the crime was committed. Upon finishing the tour, you will be noted of how Patrick Sonnier's last few weeks of life were changed by the nun Sister Helen Prejean. She took him on a spiritual journey which allowed him to part the word in peace. This tour will further encompass how ones life can be influenced by a spiritual journey.

As you first step into the exhibit you will come across Patrick Sonnier's police report. This report states, the date of the crime, Patrick's birthday, his date of execution, the method used for execution, the victims of the crime, and his method of murder.

Next you will come across an image of Patrick Sonnier's mugshot. While analyzing different possible artifacts to put in this exhibit, I thought it would be interesting to use this picture because you can physically see the anger in his outward appearance. As you continue down the exhibit, you will see how this pain and anger disappeared thanks to the help from Sister Helen Prejean.

Moving along the exhibit, you will find a Louisiana State security badge. On the night of the crime, the victims, Loretta Bourque and David LeBlanc parked in a remote area of St. Martin Parish. The two teenagers were disturbed by Patrick and his brother, Eddie Sonnier, who posed as two Louisiana State police officers with a police badge one of the brothers obtained while working as a security guard. The two brothers then told David and Loretta that they were trespassing, and proceeded to handcuff them both while taking them to what the two teenagers thought was the police station.

Next in the exhibit you will come across handcuffs similar to the ones from the crime scene. After the two teenagers were handcuffed and taken away in the Sonnier brother's car, they later arrived at a remote oil field. Once at the field, both David and Loretta were removed from the car. Once removed they were forced to a nearby forrest where David was handcuffed to a tree while Loretta was raped by Patrick Sonnier.

Farther in the exhibit you will find a 22-caliber riffle which was the weapon used to kill both David and Loretta. After being raped by Patrick, Loretta agreed to sexual intercourse with Eddie Sonnier with the condition of the two brothers setting them free. After completion of the rapes, Loretta and David were brought back to the car where their handcuffs were removed. Due to the brother's fear of the children turing them into the police, they shot Loretta and David in the back of their heads with the 22-caliber riffle.

Next in the exhibit, you will find a necklace that Sister Helen Prejean, other known as Patrick's spiritual life coach, wore around her neck. Helen was a Roman Catholic Sister and was a member of Congregation of St. Joseph. After agreeing to help Patrick before his execution, her goal was to allow Patrick to leave this world in peace.

Next in the exhibit you will find the Holy Bible. As a start to Patrick's spiritual journey, Sister Helen asked him to read The Holy Bible every night before he went to bed. This was one of her methods that she believed would bring him peace.

As you come to an end to our exhibit, you will find a book written by Sister Helen Prejean titled "Dead Man Walking". As Patrick's death date was approaching quickly, Sister Helen helped him find peace. On the day of his death, Patrick even apologized to both parents of Loretta and David and stated that he was leaving the world with no hate in his heart. Helen was able to redeem Patrick Sonnier of his past mistakes, which leads to the party's theme of redemption!
